Connect YouTube to Google Analytics
See which YouTube posts produced a conversion your property already records in Google Analytics. Setup takes one connection on each side, and no YouTube ads are required.
What you get
YouTube's figures beside GA4's conversions, and a funnel over your own product events that can be narrowed to a single campaign.
Setting it up
- Paste your TikTok account. Epoyo reads what is public and works out what you sell, who buys it and what counts as a conversion. No account is needed for this step.
- Connect YouTube. Authorise read access to a YouTube channel. Epoyo reads followers and interactions at the account level, and views, likes, comments, shares and saves on the individual posts it reads, and cannot publish, edit or delete anything.
- Connect Google Analytics. Sign in with Google and grant the analytics.readonly scope. Epoyo finds the property from your account summaries rather than asking you to paste an identifier.
- Give each destination its own code. A single bio link tells you YouTube sent traffic. A coded destination per post is what lets Google Analytics report a conversion your property already records back against the video that caused it.
The part that catches people out
This is the one pair where the referrer is worth something: enough YouTube traffic comes from real browsers that GA4 will correctly identify a share of it. That partial success is its own trap, because the browser-based slice is not representative of the whole audience.
Worth knowing about YouTube
YouTube passes a referrer more often than the others because a real share of its traffic is desktop and browser-based. It is the one platform where referrer data is worth anything, and still not worth relying on alone.
Worth knowing about Google Analytics
GA4 is a session-level tool. It is excellent at describing what happened between arrival and conversion, and structurally unable to name the video, which is the half a coded destination supplies.
Common questions
- If GA4 already shows YouTube as a source, do I need coded links?
- Yes, for two reasons. GA4 names the platform, never the video. And the traffic it can classify is the browser-based slice, which skews towards desktop viewers.
- Does this work for Shorts?
- Yes, though Shorts are more likely to be watched in the app, where the referrer behaves like TikTok's and the coded link does all the work.
